As very experienced flooring contractors, we are set many challenges by our clients, but covering over a Grade I listed wood block floor in the beautiful County Hall in Westminster, the home to the ticket hall for London Eye was definitely a challenge.
The County Hall, already grand in appearance, needed a new finish to suit the modern theme of the attraction and, most important of all, to protect the now tired wood block flooring from the thousands of visitors it greets every day.
The solution we offered was a floating floor, this enabled us to protect the floor beneath and lay a stunning modern floor above, which will last for years to come.
At the beginning of this exciting new project we offered Merlin Entertainments a varied choice of Luxury Vinyl Tiles that would suit the effect and the needs required for this project. We knew how important the overall look of the building was to London Eye and the overall public image. After careful consideration, Karndean Opus colour Rubra was chosen and works began, 600sqm and 1 week to complete before the London Eye would re-opened to the public.
We installed a product called Versilay, this was also supplied by Karndean. The product works by rolling out a polythene DPM across the original floor and special self adhesive MDF sheets installed on top, this protects the wood block floor beneath and is now our new sub floor for the Karndean Opus.
The ticket hall looks stunning and is well suited for the building, as for original beautiful wood block flooring, it is now protected for years to come.
Watched by a global audience of four billion, the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony has been hailed as a spectacular success – and Huntingdon based specialist flooring company Le Mark played a vital role by converting an original design into a printable format, producing and then installing the ‘reveal’ floor which featured so prominently in the ‘Pandemonium’ section of the ceremony.
Linda Gibbons, Le Mark, sales director, explains, “We had been working on this major project for over four months but, along with all other ceremony suppliers, we were asked to ‘save the secret’ by Danny Boyle – but now we want to tell the world.”
“We have also been collaborating with UK Trade & Investment to try and find overseas markets for our products and services and we were hoping that as the opening ceremony was the biggest shop window we could possibly ask for it would bring us new business.”
Liz Basing, regional director for UKTI East, said, “The Olympics is a once in a generation opportunity for the UK to demonstrate its global capabilities and become a focus of interest for global business. For companies like Le Mark, who can actually point to their direct involvement in the ceremony, it could also be the start of some significant new business opportunities overseas.”
One Two Three Swing! Was a solo exhibition at the Tate Modern in the Turbine Hall and extended outside.
We were contacted to help with the flooring solution as there was a specific requirement for the flooring to be the same both inside the Turbine Hall and outside. Typically different flooring is used as there are different stresses on the flooring depending on where it is placed. Clearly, weather is a major concern when fitting outside.
The flooring selected was not ideal for outside use and we advised accordingly. However, this was one of those times where the vision took priority over the practicality of the request.
Despite some challenges, the project was delivered on time and the client and artist were happy with the result.
